Founder’s Message

"Khwahish" is a traditional Urdu word, meaning "desire or wish." Khwahish Sewa Society (KHASS) was established nearly six years ago, as a consequence of our wish to make the world a better place. Originally, the work of our organization was mainly focused in India, where we worked to promote menstrual and hand hygiene in rural schools. We are incredibly grateful for the heartfelt support of Rotary Club of Grande Prairie for this project for five years. Of course, we recognize that charity begins at home. This is why we established the Khwahish Foundation, with the purpose of lending a helping hand in our local community. At present, communities across Canada are currently struggling to establish sustainable and effective responses to the growing numbers of homelessness. There are up to an estimated 235,000 Canadians that are homeless in any given year, living either on the streets or in shelters. In Grande Prairie alone, there are nearly 228 individuals without a consistent place to live each night. We at, Khwahish Foundation of Grande Prairie acknowledge the many challenges faced by persons, including having consistent access to food. Shelters such as Rotary House, which run at full capacity each night, often lack the resources to feed the overwhelming number of residents in their care.
